Pick or Pan of the Week: “Country Strong”

Pan Country StrongPAN Country Strong – A musical drama directed by Shana Feste and starring Gwyneth Paltrow, Garrett Hedlund, and Tim McGraw which tells the hokey story of a brigade of country stars and hopefuls who set out together on a career resurrection tour. In the mix, there is a rising singer-songwriter, a fallen country star, a husband/manager, a beauty queen turned singer (and a partridge in a pear tree). Throughout the tour, backstage romances and personal demons threaten to overthrow the whole honky-tonk affair.

Country Strong features some great songs, and if its chief goal is to prove that Gwyneth Paltrow can sing, then you can consider my straw hat tipped. However, if it’s trying to be an actual movie, ya know, with things like a moving plot and well-developed characters, well, then it falls flat on its biscuit. In a word, Country Strong is hee-hawful.

“Boozing, cheating, weeping, backstabbing, pill-popping — Country Strong plays more like a honky-tonk jukebox than a movie.” ~ Kevin Williamson

The 12 Days of Christmas Trailers: “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer”

On the twelfth day of Christmas Hollywood gave to me…a fire-snouted misfit

Jim Carrey irking Whoville

Jack the Pumpkin King

Bill Murray and Bah, humbug!

A towhead by his lonesome

Tim Allen down the chimney

Clark W. Griswold

You’ll shoot your eye out!

Will Ferrell wearing tights

Santa on trial

Two singing soldiers

And an angel every time a bell rings

Check out the trailer for Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer below. It may have just been a T.V. special, but even decades later, this heart-warming shout-out to nonconformity has not lost any of its glow. With cheery tunes and delightful characters, like Yukon Cornelius and Hermey the molar-loving elf, Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer is a must-watch, holiday special that will…well, it will go down in history!

The 12 Days of Christmas Trailers: “White Christmas”

On the second day of Christmas Hollywood gave to me…two singing soldiers

And an angel every time a bell rings

Check out the trailer for Irving Berlin’s White Christmas below. This film is so sweet n’sappy that it could actually give you a cavity, but with the catchy songs and the toe-tapping of Bing Crosby and Danny Kaye, it’s hard not to let one or two smiles slip as you’re watching this sugary holiday treat.

Pick or Pan of the Week: “Burlesque”

trailer reviewsPAN Burlesque – A musical drama directed by Steve Antin and starring Christina Aguilera and Cher which tells the campy story of a small-town girl with big talent who follows her dream to one day sing and strut her stuff on stage – think a tackier version of Coyote Ugly souped up with sequins and neon lights. Burlesque is highly cliché and royally wastes the talent of its cast.

“Mostly tries to copy Moulin Rouge and Chicago, but comes closer to recalling Mariah Carey’s Glitter.” ~Jeffrey M. Anderson
